Wondering what tropical trees need shade protection in our hot desert summer? Glad you asked! We listed out the trees we sell into types of summer protection needed (from personal experience) - check it out:

  • Does not require shade protection: Bamboo, Barbados Cherry, Curry, Fig, Guava, Moringa, Mulberry, Neem, Kei Apple, Jujube, Pomegranate, Rainbow Eucalyptus, Royal Poinciana, Strawberry Tree, Sugar Cane, Tamarind, Vetiver Grass
  • Shade protection not required, but these trees will look a lot better with afternoon shade the first few summers after planting: African Tulip, Banana, Jamun, June Plum, Mango, Papaya, Passion Fruit
  • Shade protection for at least the first 1-2 summers: Avocado (80% shade first year), Black Sapote, Custard Apple, Dragon Fruit, Jaboticaba, Longan, Loquat (80% shade 1st year), Mamey Sapote, Phalsa, Sapodilla, Sour Sop, Star Fruit, Sugar Apple, White Sapote, Ylang Ylang
  • Summer shade for life: Cherry of the Rio Grande, Gruimichama, Lychee, Michaelia Alba/Champak, Suriname Cherry
