Starfruit aka Carambola is a species of trees native to southeast Asia and is closely related to Bilimbi. Starfruit is a rich source in dietary fiber, Vitamins C, B2, B6, B9 and minerals such as Phosphorus, Potassium, Zinc and Iron. It's also very low in sugar (only up to 4%) and calories. 100g of starfruit contains only 31 calories.
Starfruit flesh is juicy, crunchy, firm and has pleasant, flower-like flavor to it with a hint of tangyness. Although they are mostly consumed and ripe, many people (including myself) do like to enjoy them green with salt and chili.
Here in Arizona, starfruit trees like summer afternoon shade and cold protection below mid-30s. Trees fruit over the winter and fruit better if kept as a large bush and is also easier to frost protect them at that size. They normally fruit within 1-2 years and fruit well in containers too, making it great for container growing.
